3D and Animation Courses at City College Brighton
Digital Arts at City College is able to offer a range of Part Time courses for a variety of disciplines within the areas of 3D and animation courses. Students’ have access to a full range of 3D modelling & animation software along with materials for table top for the more traditional elements of animation. The main 3D modelling software available is 3D Studio Max with other animation software in support of students’ studies.
This course is a chance to focus on what brings an animated character to life. You will develop characterisation and character performance skills for animation by experimenting with timing, exaggeration and dynamic acting for 2D animation. You will be encouraged to use traditional hand drawn techniques for ‘line tests’ together with software-based digital methods. You will develop their own 2D animation character through a series of characterisation tasks and complete a finished sequence of 2D character animation.
3D Studio Max is one of the industry level 3-D modelling and animation software packages. Whether you are an architect, animator, product designer, games designer who has some experience with 3-D Studio Max but wants to learn a wider and more advanced set of skills beyond an entry level, this is the next step up from the intro course. This intermediate course will give further consideration to those existing aspects with a broadening of skills in a range of other modelling techniques such as, nurbs, character rigging, lighting, animation and UV mapping.

Stop Motion Animation (Introduction)
This is a practical, hands-on course introducing the process of bringing objects and characters to life. Students will practice different stop motion methods including pixilation, object animation and claymation using materials and facilities provided by the College. An emphasis on experimentation and learning new techniques will culminate in the creation of stop motion characters and the production of short stop motion animated sequences.
This course explores the pre-production process for animation and approaches storyboarding for animation as a skill in its own right. The course will introduce cinematic language and explore the differences between storyboarding for live-action and animation while maintaining an emphasis on practical drawing tasks. You will develop your own story ideas through a series of storyboarding techniques and by the end of the course you will complete an animatic (a timeline-based storyboard).
