ESOL Success Stories

We are extremely proud of the progress all of out students have made but these are a few of our success stories.

Marisa

Marisa

Marisa came to Brighton from Spain in 2008. She began in ESOL Level 1 and in June 2011 passed Cambridge Advanced English (CAE). She now works as a Science teacher in a secondary school in Lewes.
“To be honest, the cost was quite important - I was impressed by how cheap the courses were, and then later how brilliant the lessons were! I think it’s also good that the students have to come to all the lessons. This helps to create a strong group dynamic and makes sure we all improve.”

Teamer and Massimo

Teamer and Massimo

Teamer came to the UK from Eritrea just over a year ago, with no knowledge of English.
She studied ESOL Entry 3 with Massimo from Italy.

“I love everything here! The lessons are so interesting and informative. And the library has lots of brilliant books that you can borrow. You can take them out for a long time!” claimed Teamer.
Massimo went to several language schools before he found the course he wanted at City College. “I was impressed by the college facilities and found the course really useful. In fact, I’m applying for the FCE course next year and hope to even take the CAE one day!” he said.
Teamer wants to go to Brighton University and become a lawyer. She wants to move on to the Level 1 Speaking and Listening course next term.

Slavomyr

Slavomyr

Slavomyr is from the Ukraine. He started an ESOL Entry 2 course in September 2011 and is already planning to study IT at City College in September 2012.
“City College is a great place to study! The college facilities like the library, Internet access and student services are fantastic. There’s a great feeling of community at the college – everybody helps each other all the time. I’m really impressed!”

Suzana and Manar

Suzana and Manar

Suzana (Albania) and Manar (Yemen) studied together on an ESOL Level 1 course.

“I like the teachers here more than at other colleges. They really seem to know what they’re doing. I’ve had lots of great experiences at the college and next year I’m going to study FCE!” said Suzana.
“To tell the truth, I don’t have many opportunities to practise English outside college, but here I can practise and improve because we do lots of speaking and listening in class. It’s perfect for me,” said Manar.
Suzana has already passed courses in Maths and Beauty Therapy at City College, and is also working as a teaching assistant in a school in Brighton.
Both students are now planning to do an FCE course next year at the college.

Klaudia and Zeneta

Klaudia and Zeneta

Klaudia, from Poland and Zaneta, from Lithuania, first met on an ESOL Entry 3 course. Last year they completed the FCE exam and in September 2012 they’ll begin a part time CAE course.
“One of the best things for me is that I’ve made so many lasting friendships with people from a really wide variety of countries and cultures. The timetables are also really convenient. You can study full time or part time, so you can still have a job if you want,” said Zaneta.
“I love the fact that there is always a clear progression from one course to the next. It’s amazing that when I first came here I was ESOL Entry 2 level and now I’m going to start an Advanced English course! I always feel as if I’m improving, which is so important,” said Klaudia.

Frida

Frida

Frida is originally from Iran. She joined ESOL classes 10 months ago, with a very low language level, and is now ready to join an Entry 3 course.
She has been attending the ESOL E1/E2 Read-Write course.

“The teachers at City College are so kind and friendly. They’ve helped me so much! Also, the college library has loads of really useful books and DVDs which I can borrow for free! I really want to work in childcare, and after ESOL, I’m going to study this subject at City College. I’d love to set up my own nursery one day.”

Clara

Clara

Clara, from the Czech Republic, came to the UK with no English, and after three months, she can communicate well.
She has been attending the ESOL E1/E2 Read-Write course.

“Since I started the course, I am much more confident when I speak English. And because of this I’ve made so many lovely friends. Studying at the college is easy and fun – I can’t believe how much I’ve improved. It’s amazing!”

Magda

Magda

Magda is from Poland. She came to City College because she wanted to learn English and change her job.
She has been attending an Entry 2 ESOL course.

“It’s great that City College is in the centre of town, it’s really easy for me to go home and go to work after class. When I first arrived, I wasn’t sure what my plans were. But now I know I’m going to join the ESOL Speaking and Listening course next term, and after that, who knows? Maybe I’ll study Travel and Tourism at the college!”

Duangchit

Duangchit

Duangchit, who comes from Thailand, has been in the UK for four years. She wanted to learn English for her future and her social life. She has been attending the ESOL E1/E2 Read-Write course.

“What I really like is the friendly atmosphere. It gives me so much confidence and I feel really relaxed in the classroom. The course was recommended to me by a friend, she told me City College had good teachers – in fact they’re great!”

Samira

Samira

Samira is originally from Morocco. She has lived in the UK for 6 months.

“I asked English people which college they’d choose to study at, and they recommended City College. I’m so happy that I listened to their advice, I love City College! I’ve learnt more than I expected. The lessons are inspiring and make studying and learning fun.”
Samira has made quick progress. In six months, she has moved through Entry Level one and into Entry Level 2.
