During this period Factory and Bank Charter Acts are passed, the Liverpool and Manchester railway opens 1830, slavery is abolished, Michael Faraday is researching electricity and Charles Darwin has published his “Origins of Species”. In 1837 Queen Victoria begins her long reign, during which is turmoil and change including cholera epidemics, Opium Wars, start of the Irish famine and repeal of the Corn Laws. Exciting advances are occurring during this period, such as first photographs of Fox Talbot and first telegraph line in England being laid 1844. Early Victorian Era sees the popularisation of Christmas with its decorated tree and first manufactured cards and crackers.
