The professed purpose of the exhibition was to celebrate the centenary of the Great Exhibition and showcase Britain’s contribution to art, science, technology and industrial design since 1851. The real aim was to boost morale of a war-weary nation as well as relieving the bleakness of post-war austerity, and to restore faith in the future.
Despite shortages of materials, labour and funds, 19 pavilions, 13 cafe-restaurants, a concert hall, cinema and various administrative offices were erected incredibly quickly on a small South Bank site - a tremendous feat of organization and teamwork.
An enlightening afternoon.
