After WWII there was a fascinating phase of filmmaking, described as ‘gritty realism’, ‘angry young men’ or ‘kitchen sink drama’ (more associated with theatre), often based on books of the same title and described as ‘New Wave’, which showed everyday life and ordinary people.
Generally set in the North, the young male protagonist fights against class distinction and wants to ‘better himself’ while women fare quite badly, in films such as “Room at the Top”, “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” and “A Kind of Loving”.
Novels and films of the period explore a rich vein of social and cultural history.
Afternoon feast for film/book-lovers.
