Course content:
Christmas customs, revealing origins of familiar traditions, such as Father Christmas, who evolved from various spirits and gods, significance of greenery, Pagan festivals, Saturnalia, Winter Solstice and Roman feastings, contrasted with the Christian religious festival and scientific explanations of the Wise Men/Three Kings following a star and what the three gifts signified. We also view grand feastings and celebrations of Medieval and Elizabethan times.
Christmas fell out of favour with Cromwell during the Civil War and we look at what happened after during the Reformation.
An enlightening and entertaining festive morning.
