Course content:
Turbulent times, the Rebecca riots and repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. The People’s Charter is issued in 1838, the same year as the Public Record Office is established, and The Rochdale Pioneers Society is founded in 1844. Victoria marries Albert in 1840, which is when the penny post comes into existence.
This is an era of great reforms and when many economic, industrial and technological changes are taking place. The Mines Act is passed in 1842, which is the year when Edwin Chadwick publishes his vastly important report on sanitary conditions.
1847 is a good year for the publication of some famous novels. Charles Dickens publishes “Dombey and Son”, Charlotte Brontë writes “Jane Eyre” and William Thackeray pens “Vanity Fair”. Tennyson becomes Poet Laureate.
There is change in the arts and styles of architecture.
