We look at work and leisure across the social divide. 1844/5 Friedrich Engels publishes “The Condition of the Working Class in England” which was massive in its scope, covering workers, occupations, industry, agriculture and technological changes.

The poor were very poor, indeed, living and working in appalling conditions. The middle-class was emerging with its new wealth and aspirations, while the wealthy were extremely rich and able to indulge in whatever amusements they chose. The seaside holiday was becoming popular.

There was also gardening, games, sports, music, theatre, art, and a wide variety of reading material from serious books on worthy subjects to novels and the cheap penny papers.
