Course aims:
This one day course will explore the traditional Japanese craft called Shibori. This technique is used to decorate fabrics, in particular kimonos. This is often referred to as tie and dye technique.
Intricate and controlled designs can be produced using different methods of tying and stitching fabrics by hand or using the sewing machine (for a more contemporary approach).
By the end of the session you'll have produced a range of samples exploring Shibori techniques.

Course content:
During this one-day session you will have an introductory talk on traditional Japanese textiles and learn different Shibori techniques such as Konoko Shibori, Miura Shibori, Itajime Shibori and Arashi Shibori.
You will need to bring the following materials/equipment with you: an apron or protective outerwear such as a shirt, latex gloves or similar, plus a ball of string, hand sewing needle and strong sewing thread, plastic food bags to put your Shibori samples in, bulldog clips and plastic clothes pegs.
Facilities for students:
You will have access to specialist teaching within a Fashion studio; also the use of sewing machines and basic textile materials.
