Choosing a Language

What level is right for you?

Learning a second language assists in developing and improving communication skills and enhancing socio-cultural understanding. We aim to make learning a language as fun and informative as possible

Course Levels

Which Level is Right for You
Level Year Description Of The Course Choose Level
Beginners 1

These courses are for those that are aiming to develop the ability to communicate in everyday situations, but at the same time to know some aspects of the fascinating culture. Speaking and listening will be the main focus of the course with advice on pronunciation. Some grammar and written work is included if appropriate.

You have no knowledge of the language or can use only a few isolated words.

Beginners 1+

These courses are for 'almost beginners' or those with a minimal knowledge of the language who feel the need to go back over the basics as well as extending and developing their confidence.

If you can do the following just well enough to be understood:

  • Say your name, where you are from, where you live and what you do.
  • Some numbers and money.
  • Order drinks and snacks.
  • Use singular and plural articles and noun, simple forms and regular verbs.
  • Shop for food
Lower Intermediate 2

For those who have already attended a beginners course for at least two terms or have already aquired a basic knowledge of the language. We will aim to extend and develop your confidence alongside expanding your vocabulary and grammatical awareness.

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Talk about family and friends.
  • Ask for things in shops or the market.
  • Order a simple meal.
  • Ask for places in town and understand directions.
  • Buy a ticket at the train or bus station.
  • Book accommodation.
  • Use simple present tense and future tense.
  • Shop for food and clothes.
Lower Intermediate 3

For those who have already completed two years of Adult Education level or similar and wish to continue to improve their fluency, confidence, vocabulary and a range of tenses

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Talk about your daily routine.
  • Use irregular verbs; express the past/future.
  • Express your likes and dislikes.
  • Talk about future plans.
  • Use of the past of some regular verbs.
Upper Intermediate 4

For those who have already completed three years at Adult Education level or similar and wish to continue to improve the fluency. We will aim to extend and develop your confidence alongside expanding your vocabulary and grammar.

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Talk about home and domestic life.
  • Make arrangements for going out, travel holidays and using transport.
  • Say how you spend your free time.
  • Say what you did in the past.
  • Manage a simple written letter or message.
  • Cope with emergencies, illness, losing things.
Upper Intermediate 5

For those who have already completed four years at Adult Education level or similar and wish to continue to improve the fluency. We will aim to extend and develop your confidence alongside expanding your vocabulary and grammar

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Discuss food and eating habits.
  • Discuss where people live and amenities of a place.
  • Discuss books, films, TV programmes.
  • Discuss pros and cons of a range of occupations.
  • Discuss past and future holidays
Upper Intermediate 6

For those who have already completed five years at Adult Education level or similar and wish to continue to improve the fluency. We will aim to extend and develop your confidence alongside expanding your vocabulary and grammar

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Say what you did, what you used to do when you were younger.
  • Speak, read and write about family, friends and lifestyles.
  • Use the future, conditional and simple forms of the subjunctive.
  • Get and give information and instructions, make arrangements by telephone and face to face.
Advanced 7

This course looks at issues in contemporary society in French/Spanish speaking countries. It uses authentic sources to increase students ability to communicate ideas and opinions.

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Read a newspaper, magazine or web page, with a dictionary for the odd word.
  • Understand most of a TV programme. Discuss issues in the news, exchange opinions, argue.
  • Talk about films, music, theatre, sport, the media etc.
  • Choose the language structures you need to express what you want.
Which Level is Right for You 2
Level Description Of The Course Choose Level
French Circle

This course looks at issues in contemporary society in French/Spanish speaking countries. It uses authentic sources to increase students ability to communicate ideas and opinions.

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Read a newspaper, magazine or web page, with a dictionary for the odd word.
  • Understand most of a TV programme. Discuss issues in the news, exchange opinions, argue.
  • Talk about films, music, theatre, sport, the media etc.
  • Choose the language structures you need to express what you want.
GCSE (Edexcel Awarding Body)

This is a well recognised qualification in Spanish and may help improve job prospects or may be used to enter further study, for example A/S level. It is also a qualification you may want to study just out of interest, to brush up existing skills, This course has been extremely successful with 99% of students attaining A* passes over the last 4 years. This course leads to the GCSE level Spanish exam.

If you can do the above fairly well, plus:

  • Talk about your family and friends.
  • Ask for things in shops or the market.
  • Order a simple meal.
  • Ask for places in town; understand directions.
  • Buy a ticket at the train, bus station
  • Book accommodation
  • Use simple present tenses, future tenses.
  • Talk about your daily routine
  • Use irregular verbs; express the past and future simple
GCE AS (Edexcel Body Award)

This course is for students who have studied Spanish to at least GCSE level or equivalent. It may help to improve job prospects or may be used to enter further study, for example the A2. It looks at aspects of contemporary Spanish society, developing the students spoken and written language.

If you can do the following just well enough to be understood, or you have GCSE Spanish:

  • Say how you spend your free time.
  • Say what you did in the past
  • Manage a simple written letter or message
  • Cope with emergencies, illness or losing things
  • Use the future, conditional and simple forms of the subjunctive
  • Get and give information and instructions, make arrangements by telephone or face to face
  • Write a letter, fax or email
GCE A2 (Edexcel Body Award)

This is the second half of the full Advanced GCE A-level. It will equip you with an advanced level of language skills, developing your ability to communicate ideas and opinions in speech and writing. You will also increase your understanding and knowledge of contemporary issues in Spanish speaking countries.

If you can do the above so that people usually know what you mean, using complex sentences, plus:

  • Read a newspaper, magazine or web page with a dictionary for the odd word.
  • Understand most of a TV programme
  • Discuss issues in the news, exchange opinions, argue.
  • Talk about films, music, theatre, sport, the media etc
  • Choose the language structires you need to express what you want
Tertulia Espanola

A course for those who have studied Spanish to A2 level or equivalent and are fluent in Spanish and wish to develop their conversational skills further. You will have the opportunity to discuss current issues, films, literature etc in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

If you can do the above fairly well:

  • Read a newspaper, magazine or web page with a dictionary for the odd word.
  • Understand most of a TV programme
  • Discuss issues in the news, exchange opinions, argue.
  • Talk about films, music, theatre, sport, the media etc
  • Choose the language structires you need to express what you want
5 Intensive Days Business Course

This is a crash course for those who want to learn a nasic business skill in the language from 22 hours study over five consecutive days.

For those who have an Upper Intermediate or Advanced level of the language

4 Hours Workshop Saturday

We aim to do revision of some of the grammar and topics you may have missed or who feel the need to go back over the basics as well as extending and developing their confidence.

For students who have missed some classes and want to catch up.

Get Ready for your Holiday 10 Week Course

A lively and interesting introduction to the language through everyday holiday situations (shopping, booking excursions, asking directions, ordering a meal, greetings)

You have no knowledge of the language or can use only a few isolated words.

Tailor-made course

This is an intensive crash course for companies that want to develop their staff knowledge of the language for job purposes.
