Disability Equality Scheme

The Disability Discrimination Act was introduced 10 years ago putting a legal obligation on colleges to anticipate and respond to the individual needs of students with disabilities.

City College has responded positively to these requirements:

Recognition that students with disabilities and learning difficulties have a fundamental right to access and to benefit from education and training
Adapting the physical environment to allow access to areas of the college that were previously not accessible
Increasing awareness and knowledge of disability issues and how this impacts on learning through training and induction
Adapting teaching practices to take account of individual student needs
Much improved processes for disclosure, identification of support needs and deliver of that support both in and out of the classroom
Improved data collection and use of data in accessing our performance

The new Disability Equality Duty (2006) furthers the requirements and responsibilities of public bodies including education providers.
