Disability Equality Scheme
The Disability Discrimination Act was introduced 10 years ago putting a legal obligation on colleges to anticipate and respond to the individual needs of students with disabilities.
City College has responded positively to these requirements:
- Recognition that students with disabilities and learning difficulties have a fundamental right to access and to benefit from education and training
- Adapting the physical environment to allow access to areas of the college that were previously not accessible
- Increasing awareness and knowledge of disability issues and how this impacts on learning through training and induction
- Adapting teaching practices to take account of individual student needs
- Much improved processes for disclosure, identification of support needs and deliver of that support both in and out of the classroom
- Improved data collection and use of data in accessing our performance
The new Disability Equality Duty (2006) furthers the requirements and responsibilities of public bodies including education providers.
