Course aims:
This demanding and intensive one year course is for those with a real enthusiasm for Art and Design who wish to pursue a future career in this growing and exciting industry. The course will extend your skills, knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Art and Design disciplines and will help you to identify where your strengths and interests lie.

The course comprises of 6 units (which is the vocational equivalent of 1 A level).

By the end of the course you will have built a comprehensive portfolio of general Art & Design work. You may wish to continue your studies and you will apply for the 2nd year (Extended Diploma in Art & Design) where you will pursue a specialist area of interest, such as Graphics, Illustration, Fashion, Textiles or Three Dimensional Design in greater depth to build a specialist portfolio that will either facilitate progression into Higher Education or enable you to apply for jobs within the Creative Industries.

Facilities for students:
You will be based within the exciting and vibrant City College Visual Arts department where we have extensive and excellent Art & Design facilities. These include a range of practical working environments and art studios including printmaking workshops, 3D wood/metal workshops & fashion studios.

Assessment: There are regular assessments throughout the course taking many different forms, both written and verbal. Each unit is assessed against grading criteria set out by the examining body and awarded either Pass, Merit or Distinction. Each grade is equivalent to points i.e. Pass = 6, Merit =12, Distinction =18

When all the units have been completed an overall qualification grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction is calculated through the aggregation of the points that have been awarded for each unit. Assessed work is both internally verified and externally moderated to ensure standardisation.

Entry Requirements:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or better or an equivalent level 2 qualification (eg BTEC or City & Guilds).

Interview for entry: Interview required

Interview preparation:
You will be asked to come for an interview and you will be expected to demonstrate your interest, enthusiasm and commitment to undertaking an Art and Design course at this level by presenting a portfolio of current / recent Art & Design work, including sketchbooks. Your work needs to demonstrate your creative abilities, including your ability to draw from direct observation, paint, handle materials and make three dimensional work. Please also bring evidence of research into different artists.

Pre-entry preparation:
There will be a summer project to complete over the holidays. This will be assessed at the start of the course.

Progression and links:
Successful completion of the Subsidiary Diploma is the vocational equivalent of 1 A level and can facilitate progression onto the Extended Diploma in Art & Design course (the vocational equivalent to 3 A levels). The Extended Diploma is completed over 4 terms and enables students to study their chosen area of specialism in greater depth. Students build a portfolio that can facilitate progression into Higher Education or employment within the Creative Industries.

This qualification prepares you for hundreds of different careers within the Creative Industries. From Textile Designer, Artist, Graphic Designer, Illustrator to Teacher, our courses have been designed for you to succeed in this fast-growing sector.

Work experience opportunities:
Students are encouraged to carry out voluntary work experience or take part in community events to enhance their CVs and applications for employment and higher education.

Free Study and Financial Support

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

There is a supplementary course fee of £60 payable at enrolment. This studio fee goes towards basic specialist materials used during the year such as timber, metals, clay, fabrics, printing inks etc. Students will also need to provide their own materials and equipment for daily use. We recommend that you should budget a minimum of £10 per week for basic materials. An art pack can be purchased from the College at the beginning of the year with essential materials for £85.00.
