Course aims:
Would you like to learn and develop the basic skills required to enter the Building industry? Would you like to take the first steps towards a career into a growing and demanding industry? Then this could be the course for you.

The Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying is designed to develop your skills and knowledge, enabling you to work in the industry of your chosen craft.

You will learn the foundation skills required to gain an understanding of the methods and techniques associated with industry with the aim towards progressing onto the Level 2 diploma, or onto an entry level job in construction.

It has been specifically developed to be delivered in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on showing what you can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification.

Facilities for students:
Students will be based at our City College East Campus in our Wet Trades Department, where there are excellent workshop facilities and well equipped classrooms for theory lessons. All tools, equipment and materials are provided to enable you to achieve the qualification.

There is a canteen on site as well as a Learning Resource Centre and all weather sports pitches. A free bus service connects City College East With the main college campus at Pelham Street.

Tutors:
All the tutors in department have many years experience in the construction industry and are fully qualified in their trade. All staff are qualified teachers and hold NVQ assessors awards.

Assessment: To gain the diploma, learners must be successful in all units and the practical assignment. They must also pass the GOLA online test, a separate knowledge test set and marked by CAA.

Awarding Body: CAA

Entry Requirements:
It is essential to have a sound knowledge of basic mathematics and a good standard of written and oral communication. To this end it is required that you have at least a grade D in English and Mathematics.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
Some background knowledge of the skills and techniques used in the industry would help and students may find it useful to do some background reading, using some of the trade journals and press reviews of the industry.

Good basic skills in communication and the use of the internet would also be an asset for the research of much of the subject area. Watching construction based programs and discussion groups would also help in preparing the student with terminology and phrases used in the industry.

Progression and links:
Level 2 in Bricklaying or Level 2 Diploma in Maintenance. It can also provide a progression route to achieving a National Vocational Qualification.

This qualification will provide basic training in the trade to enable students to progress into employment as a trainee.
