Course aims:
Are you interested in food, cooking and providing a quality service within the Catering industry? Would you like to gain a qualification that will teach you the basics about food preparation and drinks service, giving you an understanding of the industry that will lead to further training options or career choices? This could be the course for you!

This course aims to introduce you to the principles of Catering, giving you the skills and confidence to progress within the industry or further your education at City College. This course is very practical, so you will get plenty of opportunity to put the theory work into practice.

Course content:
On this course you will learn about:

Working in our Training kitchens

Practical and Classroom teaching of the following

Facilities for students:
This course will be taught in City College Catering Department.
You’ll have the opportunity of working in our training kitchens.

Some time will be spent in the Real Working Environment Restaurant.

You may have the opportunity of visiting local Food producers and outlets.

These are small classes – normally around 10 students

There is a Teaching Support Assistant to support each class

Tutors:
Our lecturers are very experienced teachers who have many years of industry experience, including Restaurant Managers & Head Chef’s.

Nicola Dabbs has been teaching this programme for 4 years with excellent results and achievements.

Assessment: You'll be assesed through observation, questioning and project work

Entry Requirements:
This is a progression course from the B0667 Entry level 3 Skills for a working Life Hospitality, Catering and Retail.

If you have done another level 1 course or Entry level course in catering you will be considered.

You are working already in the Catering Industry but need additional support in lessons.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Interview preparation:
You will be asked to come for an interview and taster day where you can show your interest, enthusiasm and commitment to catering through your studies at school, your hobbies, any work experience or your ambitions. You will need to show that you are committed to the course and prepared to work in and out of class.

Free Study and Financial Support

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.
