Course aims:
Are you interested in food, cooking and providing a quality service within the Catering industry? Would you like to gain a qualification that will teach you the basics about food preparation and drinks service, giving you an understanding of the industry that will lead to further training options or career choices? This course aims to introduce you to the principles of Catering, giving you the skills and confidence to progress within the industry or further your education at City College. This course is very practical, so you will get plenty of opportunity to put the theory work into practice.

Our Catering department has excellent facilities, including professional kitchens with modern facilities and The Gallery our very own restaurant run by students.

Tutors:
Our lecturers are very experienced teachers who have many years of industry experience, including Restaurant Managers, Head Chefs and Army Cooks.
We also have guest speakers who come in to teach and in the past these have included chefs from the famous kitchens of Heston Blumenthal.
Assessment: All formal assessment of practical skills and underpinning knowledge for the food service element will be College based in our real working environment restaurant which will take place throughout the course.
The food preparation qualification will be assessed through practical skills, short answer tests and assignment evidence.

Entry Requirements:
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade G or better or an equivalent Entry level qualification (eg BTEC, City & Guilds, NOCN).

Progression and links:
After successful completion of this qualification, you may wish to further your skills and training by applying for the Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery.
Alternatively, this qualification will enable you to apply for a basic food operative in one of the many sectors within the industry, including restaurants, hotels, contract catering, industrial and airline catering.
Work experience opportunities:
It would be advantageous for students to gain some experience of the industry, possibly through summer or weekend work.

Free Study and Financial Support
All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.
