Course aims:
This is a highly exciting course and is designed for students who have interests in interactive media and is ideal for anyone wanting to develop their involvement and skills in a variety of differing forms of creative interactive practices.

This might include web design, image manipulation, sound design, music development, character animation, to name but a few.

Whether students are interested in wanting to become a games designer, 3D modeller, web designer etc, this could the first stage in realising a career in a variety of fields within the Creative Industries.

It is an ideal preparation for the higher level courses in Games Development and Music Technology that are on offer at City College, which in themselves lead to career possibilities and or higher level University courses.

Course content:

Facilities for students:
The course provides a good range of relevant industry level hardware and software in support of students’ studies. All students on the course have access to a full range of City College facilities including the Library Resource area and other study support facilities. Students are also given the opportunity to attend study and field trips.

Brighton is home to many interactive development companies (BlackRock studios; Relentless; Zoemode; Kerb; Babel; Futurlab to name but a few), which means that practitioners from the field speak to our students, offer us advice on new developments and help us understand the requirements of employers, present lecturers, offer and review portfolios.

Tutors:
Courses are delivered by tutors with extensive industry experience and there are strong links with local employers who regularly work alongside the College in providing ‘live projects’ for students to give you a taste of the challenges you will face in the industry.

Assessment: Assessment throughout is by coursework assignment and deadlines will be set through the year which you will be required to meet in order to achieve the best results that you can. Pass, Merit or Distinction grades are awarded to each of the 9 assessed units. All assignments must be at least at Pass level to achieve the BTEC L2 Diploma.

Entry Requirements:
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades E or better or an equivalent level 1 qualification (eg BTEC or City & Guilds).

Interview for entry: Interview required

Interview preparation:
You will be required to attend an interview to demonstrate your interest, enthusiasm as well as your aptitude for both creativity and technology. You should also bring a portfolio of visual artworks and/or Music samples created by you.

Progression and links:
Students who have successfully completed the Award will be able to apply to the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Creative Media Production (Games Development).

Free Study and Financial Support

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

Further information: General course costs required such as sketchbooks and art materials etc will amount to approximately £180 for the year. Also candidates are required to further purchase a transferable hard drive of a minimum capacity of a 100Mb to store their coursework.
