Course aims:
This one-year Diploma course will extend and develop your visual and computer skills learned on the Subsidiary Diploma in Creative Media (Games Development) with the focus of developing work for the Computer Games Industry.
You will learn about how computer games are designed, developed and produced through both practical and theoretical study. Throughout the course you will develop practical skills using digital media design technology and gain a thorough understanding of the design and making process.
You will have the opportunity to test out a range of different computer games and analyse their components to inform your own developing ideas. In exploring a range of design approaches, different games platforms and digital design software, you will be able to develop your own ideas and the know-how of what goes into the making of a playable and exciting computer game.
Our games development courses aim to give students insight into as many facets of gaming as possible with an emphasis on the creative and artistic aspects along with a thorough grounding in the history of games design and its cultural importance. City College is proactive in attracting a balance of female and male students to an exciting area of study which is no longer seen as a male dominated field.

Facilities for students:
The course provides a good range of relevant industry level hardware and software in support of students’ studies. Students’ also have access to a full range of consoles and games software to continue to develop their understanding of computer games software and game play again in support of their studies.
All students on the course have access to a full range of City College facilities including the Library Resource area and other study support facilities.
Students are also provided the opportunity to attend study and field trips.
Brighton is home to many games development companies (BlackRock studios; Relentless; Zoemode; Kerb; Babel; Futurlab to name but a few), which means that practitioners from the field speak to our students, offer us advice on new developments and help us understand the requirements of employers, offer internships, present lecturers, offer Games testing opportunities, review portfolios and employ directly.
Tutors:
Course Leader Paul Grant is an industry professional with a background in 3D modelling, animation, Digital Graphics and special effects. Paul has excellent contacts in the Games Industry and is an enthusiastic and experienced lecturer. Additional tutors on the course are all specialists in their own related fields.
Assessment: Assessment throughout is by coursework assignments. Deadlines will be set through the year which you will be required to meet in order to achieve the best results that you can. Pass, Merit or Distinction grades are awarded to each of the assessed units and a final overall grade is awarded.

Interview preparation:
Potential candidates for this course are required to bring a portfolio of drawings and visual/Digital artworks. Feedback from the games development industry suggests that traditional artistic skills are far more important than simply having the ability to use software.
Progression and links:
Most students apply to undergraduate programmes at Degree level and receive places from some of the best Universities in the UK to further develop their studies and skills in the areas of Gaming, Character Animation, 3D Modelling, Interactive and Graphic Design etc.
Some students prefer to go directly into industry working in similar areas as indicated above and the College has a good track record where students have achieved this both locally and nationally.

Free Study and Financial Support
All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

General course costs required such as sketchbooks and art materials etc will amount to approximately £180 for the year. Also candidates are required to further purchase a transferable hard drive of a minimum capacity of a 100Mb to store their coursework.
