Course aims:
Hairdressing is an exciting, colourful and expanding industry that offers diverse opportunities in further education, training and employment. At City College we aim to provide a range of courses to start you on a successful career path in the Hairdressing industry, with opportunities for progression onto higher levels of qualifications.

You will learn about the Hairdressing principles such as: customer service skills, reception, health and safety, and a variety of hairdressing technical skills. You will develop important skills such as communication and teamwork.

Training at City College is an fantastic experience. You'll have the chance to learn in a practical environment that will prepare you for the world of work of further education. As well as the hands-on, creative lessons in modern well-equipped studios, you'll have the opportunity to work in our professional salon, which are open to staff and the public for hair and beauty treatments. Our students have found this experience very helpful when approaching employers who value experience as well as qualifications.

A Level 2 (NVQ) Diploma in Hairdressing is an industry recognised qualification that is valued by employers and is seen as a route onto Higher Education.

City College is a major provider of Hairdressing courses in East-Sussex and has high levels of success rates for our learners. We have invested in the department over the last 2 years with a re-furbishment of the salons and reception area.

You will work towards functional skills for Communications, ICT and AON (application of number) at the appropriate level. This will improve all areas of your English, including punctuation, spelling techniques, formal letters etc; and for AON you will improve on areas of your maths for percentages, and ratios, which is essential for the mixing of colours in Hairdressing.

Facilities for students:
Students are based at Pelham Tower Campus, where we have very good facilities for practical and theory work. These include two well equipped training salons, and Hair and Beauty reception.

Tutors:
The Hairdressing department is staffed by experienced and enthusiastic tutors who have an excellent variety of practical skills and links with local employers and organisations in the area. This will enable students to have every opportunity of finding employment in the Hairdressing industry.

Assessment: There is no final examination but you will be continuously assessed using a range of methods; observation of practical work, oral questions, assignments, written tests and portfolio evidence to demonstrate understanding.

Awarding Body: VTCT

Entry Requirements:
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades C or better or an equivalent level 1 qualification (eg BTEC or City & Guilds).

Progression and links:
After successful completion of this course you may wish to further your training or gain a qualification that can lead to a supervisory roll by enrolling onto the Level 3 (NVQ) Diploma in Hairdressing at City College.

At the end of your course you will be able to enter into employment as a junior stylist. As you are required to have a salon placement running alongside your course, very often employers will offer to employ you on completion of your qualification.

Work experience opportunities:
Students will get the opportunity to work one day a week in a salon placement during term time.

Free Study and Financial Support

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.
