Course aims:
Have you always wanted to work in the motor vehicle industry? Would you like to learn invaluable skills that you can carry through life no matter what career you have?
City College is the leading provider of Motor Vehicle Studies and has been training young men and women since 1946, supporting students to achieve in their studies which are all industry led. The Motor Vehicle department is one of the most successful in the College.
Our Full-time courses are all Vocational VRQ courses and are certified and recognised by the Institute of the Motor Vehicle
This qualification is ideal for anyone who wishes to pursue a career as a service technician and anyone keen to develop knowledge of the Motor Industry from a repair and refit perspective. Level 1 is the first step on the progression route from novice to qualified mechanic, a journey which will present a host of employment opportunities from fast fit to Formula One.
All our courses involve students studying both the theory and practical aspects of light vehicle maintenance including health and safety and other skills associated with working in a garage and this blend ensures a diverse range of learning opportunities for our students. No two days are the same!
Students will learn key skills and gain an in insight into light vehicle technology. Through our enrichment opportunities and tutorial program students will see a growth in their personal and social development.

Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.
Facilities for students:
Students will have use of our new state of the art flagship workshop facility at CCE.
Also students will have access to all City Colleges facilities including, Library, Refectory and Students Union.

Assessment: On the course there will be Practical Assessments, On Line Assessments, Written Assessments as well as a Portfolio to complete.

Entry Requirements:
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade G or better, an equivalent Entry level qualification (eg BTEC, City & Guilds, NOCN) or suitability at interview.

It would be useful to read Hillier’s Fundamentals Of Motor Vehicle Technology – 5th Edition.
Progression and links:
On completion of this Level 1 course you may wish to continue your studies at City college and move on to the VRQ Award in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Level 2.
Alternatively you could use the skills you have learnt and move straight into the motor vehicle workplace either in Customer Service or perhaps as an Apprentice.

Free Study and Financial Support
All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.
