Course aims:
Having had some prior experience of working with a camera, this course will develop your practical skills and visual awareness. You will explore how to use photography as a medium for communication and personal expression.
We encourage you to think about your photography and to find your own interests and means of using the medium. You will also learn how to set up a shoot and different methods of producing prints, including digital techniques. The course focuses on portfolio building for both employment and in preparation for interview for Higher Education courses.
The Photography department at City College is staffed by practising professional photographers and it attracts an eclectic mix of students covering a broad age range. The method of delivery is module-based, with assignments set every term and lively debates and critiques which help students identify the strengths and weaknesses in their work
The skills that you learn include studio lighting, dark room skills, printing from negatives, scanning from negatives, hand colour printing, digital printing, using medium format 35mm SLR cameras, film cameras, large format cameras plus digital practices such as Photoshop to produce digital prints. Historical and contemporary contextual studies help to underpin the practical work
Courses concentrate not only on assessments but also on portfolios. You will therefore leave the course with a strong body of work to show to universities or employers. The photography end of year show also showcases student excellence to potential employers.

The course is a mixture of practical and theoretical study in photography. You will be required to produce evidence in the following units:
Facilities for students:
We do expect that students own either a digital or film 35mm camera. The course has 4 studios spaces equipment with tungsten and studio flash lighting kits. You will use lightmeters and reflectors, tripods and infra red synch switches. There is also a black and white darkroom with 18 enlargers and 4 printing developing sections to enlarge prints. In addition there is a 12 enlarger colour darkroom which has a colour RA4 dry to dry print process. Other facilities include a computer suite with Adobe Photoshop and 2 Nikon high resolution negative scanners.
Assessment: Assessment is on a continuous modular basis, with all assessments counting towards your final grade which is awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Presentation of your work is part of the assessment procedure.

Many students are successful in gaining entry into the most popular and competitive BA (Hons) courses in the country. Free Study and Financial Support
All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2012. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

Further information: In recent years, City College’s photography department has produced award-winning photographers such as Gary Eastwood (Landscape Photographer of the Year 2008) and Lawrence Akehurst (Student Photographer of the Year 2004).
A course material list will be issued during induction. Hard drive storage device is essential along with ink jet printing paper and notebooks.
