Course aims:
This course is suitable for students specifically interested in studying networking and prepares you to start a career in networking design and/or organisation. It is a two-year foundation degree course based at City College Brighton and Hove.
You will learn practical skills through project work including taking computer systems apart and then putting the parts back together. You will also experiment with connecting groups of computers into a network with routers, using different protocols. The skills to administer networks are taught and core subjects such as programming, databases and requirement analysis.

Course content:
Teaching is generally the equivalent of two days per week spread over three-four days. In addition students are expected to undertake individual study to complete assignments and to read course materials. Teaching is through a mixture of lectures and guided tutorials in computer laboratories.

The course is staffed by a team of experienced tutors and industry professionals, including: Martyn Hulme who has been involved with computers for all of his professional life, Dave Stubbs who worked for several years at IBM, and Jennie Harding, a graduate of the University of Brighton.
Assessment: Most modules are assessed by assignments that are marked according to published criteria, by portfolios that illustrate practical tasks carried out and/or by phase tests.

A-levels:
160 UCAS tariff points, from a minimum of one 12-unit or two 6-unit qualifications. Relevant A-level subject. Level 3 Key Skills will count towards the tariff score. General Studies will count towards the tariff score.
International Baccalaureate:
24 points, certificates considered.
QAA-approved access course:
acceptable.
GCSE (minimum grade C):
at least 3 subjects including English language and mathematics.
For non-native speakers of English:
IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.
Other:
Mature students considered on their merits/experience.
Pre-entry preparation:
This course is only suitable for those with a zest for computing and IT. We expect you to attend regularly and do not tolerate casual or erratic participation.
Progression and links:
After successfully completing the course you will be ready to start a career as a network technician in a medium to large company, this would probably be as part of a team of technicians. Alternatively you could choose to top-up your qualification to an honours degree in computer science or software engineering.
Work experience opportunities:
There are many small enterprises in the city that specialise in new media, web development and support and we encourage students to try and obtain work experience.

Tuition fees for 2012/13:
The tuition fee for this course will be £7,500 for 2012 entry. Most students will be eligible for a loan from Student Finance England to cover the cost of fees, so most students are not expected to pay this amount upfront.
