Course duration: 2 years

Course aims:
Our Fine Art foundation degree provides a broad, interdisciplinary experience of contemporary fine art practice, with the opportunity to focus on an individual creative path. A practical, studio-based approach provides the opportunity for you to develop your personal creative fine art language, skills and philosophies. You will develop professional and collaborative relationships with other artists, employers and professional bodies.

Course content:
The first year will develop your skills and confidence in a range of fine art disciplines through negotiated projects and self-directed study. This will prepare you for the second-year programme when you will pursue a more individual contemporary practice pathway.

Study includes both traditional and progressive approaches to fine art practice, and ensures that Fine Art foundation degreee holders are equipped for a range of both creative and technical careers in fine art. All aspects of the course are supported by a solid grounding in critical and contextual studies.

Facilities for students:
FdA Fine Art offers designated studios for sustained practical work throughout the duration of the course. Alongside individual studio spaces, students have access to specialist workshop, print and media facilities and may negotiate use of specialist facilities from the broad range of courses offered throughout the College.

Students are encouraged to participate in activities and resources at the College and at the University of Brighton.

Tutors:
The FdA in Fine Art is managed, taught and supported by a team of experienced lecturers, practitioners and technicians.
The teaching team has national and international exhibition, research and academic profile and is augmented by a programme of visiting practitioners from a broad range of creative disciplines

Assessment: Practical units are assessed through the development, documentation and presentation of Fine Art outcomes, proposals and evaluative documents (75%). Theoretical units are assessed through extended essays, presentations and critical reviews (25%).

UCAS tariff:
160 points, from a minimum of one 6-unit qualification in GCE Art and Design, or BTEC National Awards Art and Design.

International Baccalaureate:
not suitable.

QAA-approved access course:
acceptable; subject-specific units.

GCSE (minimum grade C):
at least 3 subjects including English language and mathematics or a science.

For non-native speakers of English:
IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.

Other:
Art and Design Foundation Diploma. Interview and portfolio review.

Pre-entry preparation:
Successful applicants are required to demonstrate an emerging Fine Art identity and commitment to Fine Art practice through the presentation of practical and written work at interview

Progression and links:
Graduates are well prepared to move into professional practice. You may also wish to progress to an honours degree programme offered at the university or at another institutions.

Work experience opportunities:
From the outset, students are expected to develop meaningful professional relationships within and beyond the College environment, through negotiated projects, work-related study and live projects.

Tuition fees for 2012/13:
The tuition fee for this course will be £7,500 for 2012 entry. Most students will be eligible for a loan from Student Finance England to cover the cost of fees, so most students are not expected to pay this amount upfront.
