Course aims:
Music Production at City College Brighton and Hove focuses on the role of the creative recording producer. From the start you will gain practical experience of music production and work with professionals from the music industry.

You will be introduced to the technologies and processes used to compose, produce and perform music. And you'll learn to manage the whole process of developing musical ideas in the studio with musicians, creating and producing recordings that satisfy clients' requirements. The type of music recorded or produced can take any form. You will also be working towards a broader understanding of the current music industry and how you can identify your role in the field.

Course content:
Assessments take place at the end of each module or unit of study. Forms of assessment include practical performances and workshops, assignments in the workplace, research and written projects.

In year 1, you will explore the nature of sound and how music is created and produced via modules in sound recording, notation and harmony, computer music production, plus a module delving into the current music industry. You will apply what you learn from these studies in a personal research project carried out by visiting and interacting with practitioners and organisations within the music production industry.

Year 2 is about broadening your knowledge, skills and understanding with the opportunity to compose and arrange music in a production context. You will apply your skills to working with multimedia products such as computer games or film and television. You will also gain the experience of working to a realistic brief generated by professionals in the industry or by working on real projects. You will also develop skills, working with sound in experimental contexts.

Tutors:
The course is delivered by an experienced team of music industry academics and professionals.

Every year, thousands of students study HE qualifications in FE Colleges, benefitting from supportive relationships with academic staff, hands-on experience, and access to top class facilities. All our HE courses are validated by the University of Brighton, so students benefit from the facilities of both the College and the University.

Assessment: Assessments take place at the end of each module or unit of study. Forms of assessment include practical recordings, assignments in the workplace, research and written projects.

UCAS tariff:
minimum of 160 UCAS points from GCE's, BTEC Awards, Certificates, Diplomas and/or equivalent creative arts or performing arts qualifications. Level 2 qualification in English or communication.

For non-native speakers of English:
IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.

Other:
There are 15 places available (competition for places is high and only the most suitable
students will be offered a place).
To be offered a place on the course students need to demonstrate four things:

academic work

If you want to be a Creative Professional, i.e. Creative Music Producer (Quincy Jones,
Brian Eno etc…), composer, sound-designer, freelance artist, song-writer, teacher,
lecturer or curator for example then this could well be the course for you.
If you want to work in a technical role, sound engineer, technician, studio manager, DJ, audio-mixer, mastering, etc…then there may be other more suitable courses for you
(check with UCAS).
Creative Music Production BA (Hons) top up Given the limited number of places, you are advised to apply through UCAS.

Progression and links:
Graduates are well equipped to take advantage of employment opportunities that exist within different branches of the music industry or explore freelance routes. Options include record production, A&R, music programming, sound engineering and composition for a range of different formats including multimedia products. You may also be able to progress onto one of our degrees in a related subject.

Work experience opportunities:
The course encourages students to find work experience opportunities in commercial recording studios in Brighton as well as with local Record Labels and other creative music companies.

Tuition fees for 2012/13:
The tuition fee for this course will be £7,500 for 2012 entry. Most students will be eligible for a loan from Student Finance England to cover the cost of fees, so most students are not expected to pay this amount upfront.
