Course aims:
The main aim of this course is to assist in your successful progression onto a higher education course in an art and design subject.

In order to do that:

The majority of students on the course are returning to education or want a career change. The adult cohort makes the experience mature and exciting for the you.

The course suits those who have identified that they want to take their art and design studies much further and develop their thinking, problem solving and creative potential.

To gain entry on to this course you must be working at the correct level, before you get onto the course your portfolio will be looked at in terms of its potential to benefit from the course. If you’re currently not of the right standard for the course we will be able to advise on the correct level for you to be studying at.

The course provides different strategies for generating ideas and explores the different contexts of art and design practice. This enables students to identify their strengths and see how their works sits within the areas of Fine Art, 3D, Graphics, Illustration, Fashion or Textiles.

Students will need to undertake research into artists and designers to aid their own development. They will also undertake a written assignment that will develop their written, research and contextual skills.

The latter part of the course will be project based and allow students to work in a more independent way establishing and developing their own visual language supported through tutorials, seminars and more specific technical inputs suiting individual needs.

Tutors:
A range of enthusiastic & experienced full-time and part-time teaching staff teach on this course. The tutors provide a wide range of professional expertise, skills and industrial experience as practising designers, artists and educators.

Assessment: You will be assessed three times. This will correspond to the three stages of the course, exploratory, pathway and confirmatory. Initially you will be assessed on your ability to work independently to a brief and this when you apply for the course. There should be sufficient evidence in your portfolio that you have passed the exploratory stage criteria.

You will be assessed using continual assessment of progress through peer review, 1:2:1 tutorial and receive three formal assessments of portfolio evidenced based work throughout the year

Entry Requirements:
Students will be 19+ and will have successfully completed year one of the Part time Foundation Exploratory course, or successfully completed a Subsidiary Diploma or National Diploma course in Art and Design.

Applicants wishing to apply for direct entry onto The Foundation Pathway course will need to submit a strong portfolio of work which will need to meet the Foundation Exploratory Stage Assessment Criteria (Unit 1: Researching Recording and Responding in Art and Design & Unit 2 Media Experimentation in Art and Design). Portfolios will be assessed against this criteria when applicants are called for interview.

Interview preparation:
You must attend an interview and present a portfolio of recent artwork. You will be asked questions about your own work and the work of other artists and designers that relate to your practice.

Progression and links:
The course facilitates progression onto higher education. The majority of our students want to go onto a degree or a Foundation degree and we have a very good track record of students progressing onto good H.E. courses. Students are given considerable support in preparing their portfolios and helping them make the right decision.

In a few instances some Part-time foundation students have progressed onto MA courses.

For those students not wanting to go into HE there will also be guidance on: professional practice, arts council funding setting up galleries and applying to competitions and exhibitions.

The majority of students wishing to pursue an art and design career will usually have a degree in an art and design subject

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year): 1: £0 2: £375 3: £2,075

The cost of these courses are split into 3 categories. Category 1: If you are aged between 19-23 years and are studying at the level of your chosen course for the first time. This applies to Level 1, 2 and 3 courses. If this is your first level 3 course, the upper age limit is 24. Category 2: If you are in receipt of a 'work- related' benefit such as Job Seekers Allowance, or that you can self-certify (sign a form) that you are actively seeking work. Category 3: if you do not sit within Categories 1 or 2, this will be the cost you will need to pay for your course.

A materials list is provided prior to the start of term (approx £100), but students will need to top up consumable items (paper, paint etc) This will be approximately £5.00+ per week
