Course aims:
Do you feel you have real creative potential, perhaps you are considering a change of career path towards the arts?

This exploratory year is the perfect choice if you’ve decided that you want to take your art and design studies further and also develop your thinking, problem solving and creative potential. The start of the course explores both 2D and 3D visual language. You’ll then be introduced to the different areas of specialism, which will inform how your own work develops. You’ll then be given more open ended projects, which will allow you to extend your own practice.

This art course is also useful if you’re looking to progress onto a degree course in art and design. The usual route onto an art and design degree course is to take a foundation art course. This is the first year of a two year foundation programme, but can also be taken as a one year stand alone qualification. However you will need to complete both years to have the full qualification needed to apply for a degree.

Students who successfully pass the first year can apply to progress onto the second year of the part-time foundation course. The majority of people on this course are returning to education or want a career change. The adult cohort makes the experience mature and exciting for the you.

To gain entry on to this course you must be working at the correct level, before you get onto the course your portfolio will be looked at in terms of its potential to benefit from the course. If you’re currently not of the right standard for the course we will be able to advise on the correct level for you to be studying at.

Course content:
On this course you will study:

The course introduces students to visual language in both two dimensions and three dimensions. The main emphasis in the first term is to develop students’ observational drawing and painting skills which is fundamental to all artists and designers.

Throughout the course there will be a series of technical workshop inductions such as: Photoshop, Plaster, Printmaking and Textile techniques. These technical inputs will feed into a series of themed projects.

The course provides different strategies for generating ideas and explores the different contexts of art and design practice. This enables students to identify their strengths and see how their works sits within the areas of Fine Art, 3D, Graphics, Illustration, Fashion or Textiles.

Students are required to undertake research into artists and designers to aid their own development. They will also undertake a written assignment that will develop their written, research and contextual skills.

The latter part of the course will be project based and allow students to work in a more independent way establishing and developing their own visual language supported through tutorials, seminars and more specific technical inputs suiting individual needs.

Entry Requirements:
Strong portfolio of art and design work and sketchbooks demonstrating potential and a desire to develop skills and knowledge.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Interview preparation:
You will be asked to submit a portfolio of recent artwork (including sketchbooks) and a CV as well as produce a written response to set questions.

You will watch a presentation on the course and be given the opportunity to ask questions

Your portfolio will be looked at in terms of its potential to benefit from the course, and to ascertain that you are at the right level for the course requirements.

You will then be given a 1:1 interview where you will be asked the questions you have prepared for.

Progression and links:
Most students will progress onto the part-time foundation course to prepare their portfolio for a degree application.

Most careers in art and design will usually require a degree qualification

How much will the Tuition Fees cost?

Below are the fees for this course.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year): 1: £0 2: £315 3: £1,515

The cost of these courses are split into 3 categories. Category 1: If you are aged between 19-23 years and are studying at the level of your chosen course for the first time. This applies to Level 1, 2 and 3 courses. If this is your first level 3 course, the upper age limit is 24. Category 2: If you are in receipt of a 'work- related' benefit such as Job Seekers Allowance, or that you can self-certify (sign a form) that you are actively seeking work. Category 3: if you do not sit within Categories 1 or 2, this will be the cost you will need to pay for your course.

A materials list is provided prior to the start of term (approx £100), but students will need to top up consumable items (paper, paint etc), so you should also budget for at least £5.00 per week.
