Course aims:
On this 2 year course you will develop the skills you needed to pursue a successful career in brickwork, you’ll learn practical skills including erecting masonry, plastering and tiling. You’ll develop your skills on site and will also be assessed on your portfolio of work completed whilst at work.
This brickwork course builds on experience and knowledge you’ve gained on site and on Level 1 and 2 courses you may have taken.
This Level 3 NVQ Diploma is highly valued by industry employers and is the minimum you will need to work as a bricklayer on site.
It is a requirement of this qualification that you are employed in the construction industry in a bricklaying capacity.

Students will be based at our City College East campus where we have

We also have library and computers available for use as well as full-size, all-weather and grass, football pitches, indoor sports hall, gym and dance studio.

Assessment: This qualification is assess by you generating work based evidence which your assessor will assess on site. A site based visit will be arranged several times during the year. While on site your assessor will test your knowledge and understanding with verbal questioning.

Entry Requirements:
You must be working in the industry in a bricklaying capacity either as an experienced bricklayer, an improver or an apprentice. It is vital that the company your work for can cover the range of work activities that include setting out and building cavity walling, solid walling and block walling. In addition there are optional units that include conreting, drainage, roofing, building to Timber framed construction, Thin joint masonry.

Pre-entry preparation:
Some background knowledge of the skills and techniques used in the industry would help and students may find it useful to do some background reading using some of the trade journals and press reviews of the industry. Basic skills in communication and the use of the internet would also be an asset for the research of much of the underpinning knowledge. Watching construction based programmes and discussion groups would also help in preparing the student with terminology and phrases used in the industry.

The L3 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations will allow you to gain work as a qualified bricklayer in the construction industry.

Further information: A pass in the CAA Health & Safety test is NOT a requirement of this award. However it may prove useful to obtain a pass in the CSCS Health & Safety Test, this test can be taken at our centre for an additional fee.
It is your responsibility to gather evidence from site for this qualification and present it to your assessor.
