Course aims:
The aim of this course is to build on the skills you have already developed in the workplace or on the Level 2 course and to also develop new skills, knowledge and techniques.
You’ll build on the experience and knowledge that you have gained on site or on a Level 2 course. You’ll be assessed on the jobs you carry out each day whilst at work, this grading will be measured against the national standards for the award.
NVQ Level 3 is the industry recognised qualification that is hugely valued by
employers and will enable you to work at a high level as a Decorator on site.
It is a requirement of this qualification that you are employed in the construction industry.
Course content:
Facilities for students:
Students will be based at our City College East campus where we have
extensive and excellent facilities for practical and theory work.
We also have library and computers available for use as well as full-size, all-weather and grass, football pitches, indoor sports hall, gym and dance studio.
For talented sportspeople we have a number of College teams that
compete against other local and national colleges.
Tutors:
The Decorative Occupations department is staffed by experienced and enthusiastic tutors who have many years experience on site as tradesmen as well as teaching experience. This will enable students to receive excellent training that will help them in their search for employment. All staff are experienced A1 vocational NVQ assessors and will visit you on site to assess your competence in the work place.
Assessment: This qualification is assess by you generating work based evidence which your assessor will assess on site. A site based visit will be arranged several times during the year. While on site your assessor will test your knowledge and understanding with verbal questioning.

Entry Requirements:
You must be working in the industry in a painting and decorating capacity either as an experienced decorator, an improver or an apprentice. It is vital that the company your work for can cover the range of work activities that include Applying paint systems by brush and roller.

Pre-entry preparation:
Some background knowledge of the skills and techniques used in the industry would help and students may find it useful to do some background reading using some of the trade journals and press reviews of the industry. Basic skills in communication and the use of the internet would also be an asset for the research of much of the underpinning knowledge. Watching construction based programmes and discussion groups would also help in preparing the student with terminology and phrases used in the industry.

Further information: A pass in the CAA Health & Safety test is NOT a requirement of this award. However it may prove useful to obtain a pass in the CSCS Health & Safety Test, this test can be taken at our centre for an additional fee.
