Course aims:
If you are looking to return to education and gain a general education in a supportive environment and discover your level, potential and possible progression routes then this course is for you.

This course aims to prepare students who may wish to progress to a level 3 course such as the Access to Higher Education Diploma or another vocational course.

If you left school with few or no qualifications and are keen to study one of our access courses then this is the course for you. It will focus on developing your abilities in Literacy, Numeracy and IT. You will also study a range of specialist subjects such as Psychology, Business, Biology and Sociology which will serve as “taster” sessions to help you decide which Access qualification or other course to follow next.

The course leads to the OCN Diploma in Progression level 2.

Please note that although Access courses are part-time courses, you will need to complete a full-time application form when applying for this course along with a personal statement."

Course content:
These are examples of some of the units of work on the programme:

Facilities for students:
Teaching will take place in our main campus where classrooms will be fully equipped with up to date technology.

Tutors:
The tutors are well qualified, experienced and enthusiastic and understand the needs of Pre Access learners and provide appropriate support and guidance.

Assessment: Assessment will be continuous throughout the course and will involve a variety of methods such as essays, presentations, projects and short tests.

Awarding Body: OCNSER

Entry Requirements:
You do not need any formal qualifications but will need to demonstrate ability in Literacy at level 1 and Numeracy at level 1.

You must be prepared to spend a minimum of 5 hours per week on home study.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
There is no required set reading but it would be useful to look at possible careers and to research courses and universities prior to starting the course to help with your next step.

Progression and links:
The qualification is an accepted entrance qualification to Access to HE Diploma courses.

The course is suitable for those who are interested in improving their career prospects through further study. Some such careers might be in nursing and midwifery, biomedical sciences, Business, Travel and Tourism, the Media as well as other careers open to all graduates.

Work experience opportunities:
There is no formal work experience but you will be able to draw on any work experience in class discussions.

There may also be outside speakers and visits relevant to the programme.

How much will the Tuition Fees cost?

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year): 1: 0 2: £265 3: £1,465

The cost of these courses are split into 3 categories. Category 1: If you are aged between 19-23 years and are studying at the level of your chosen course for the first time. This applies to Level 1, 2 and 3 courses. If this is your first level 3 course, the upper age limit is 24. Category 2: If you are in receipt of a 'work- related' benefit such as Job Seekers Allowance, or that you can self-certify (sign a form) that you are actively seeking work. Category 3: if you do not sit within Categories 1 or 2, this will be the cost you will need to pay for your course.
