Support and courses for students with learning difficulties

The Learning Support department at City College Brighton and Hove works with learners with disabilities and/or literacy, numeracy and language difficulties. The Ofsted / Adult Learning Inspectorate recently identified our “effective additional learning support” as one of the key strengths of the College.

Disability

We welcome applications from learners with disabilities and will make reasonable adjustments to all aspects of the College service to avoid substantial disadvantage to any disabled person. You do not have to tell us about your disability, but this may affect our ability to offer you support that you may need.
City College Brighton and Hove acknowledges the social model of disability and recognises that people can be disabled by their environment. We have an ongoing programme to develop skills and improve resources in the college to improve access to all of our services.
We are currently producing a Disability Equality Scheme and encourage the participation of all disabled learners, staff and users of college services.
Services available to learners with disabilities may include:

• In-class support from learning support assistants, note takers and communication support workers
• Use of specialist software and equipment
• Reasonable adjustment to teaching and learning and for physical access
• Individuals or small groups help with literacy or numeracy
• Provision of specialist services
• Improved data collection and use of data in assessing our performance

Applicants with disabilities are encouraged to contact the College in advance to discuss the need for support or reasonable adjustments.
If you have dyslexia, a literacy, numeracy or language difficulty that may affect your ability to succeed on a course then Learning Support can offer help:

• A screening system which is used to identify learners for literacy, numeracy or language support classes.
• We can provide support assistants or note takers to work in class with learners.
• A variety of equipment and software which can be used by learners to assist them in studying.
• Learning Support sessions to develop your skills.
• Specialist assessment and support for learners with dyslexia.

If you have told us that you would like support, or if screening shows that you need it, we will work with you to decide the support you need and when to provide it.
