Why do I come to the Connaught?
(The Centre, I mean, not the pub),
I come for the fun and laughter,
I come for the coffee and grub,
One can do many things at the Connaught,
Like Sculpture and Textiles and Crafts,
Spanish and French or Russian and Greek,
Photography, Cooking and Arts,
You may talk and discuss many issues,
You may learn lots of wonderful things,
You can play a sweet air, sing a sad song,
Make beautiful music with strings,
Why do I come to the Connaught?
I come for the biscuits and tea,
To draw and to paint funny pictures,
(I'm sure that you will all agree),
The atmosphere's positive, vibrant,
It moves at a breath-taking pace,
All the people who work here are helpful,
It's a super and civilised place!
Our tutor has nutured and encouraged what talent we have until we have been able to exhibit and sell work, and she is happy - a very generous gesture - to exhibit in sculpture societies and have us as equals. Her talent is tremendous, her enthusiasm just what we need, and she combines being in control of any situation with complete diplomacy.
I am an experienced adult learner, having done classes in creative writing, mosaic and computing, among others. This year I have been doing Pottery for Beginners at the Connaught Centre, having done a taster course withe Leisurelink (RNIB).
I have a visual impairment and have found clay to be a wonderfully tactile material for artistic expression. It has been a good way to develop and discuss ideas and build my knowledge of the subject. I feel more confident with the materials and my ability to use them.
I love my Textiles course - so much so that I'm now in my third year! It's stimulating and exciting even if it is very hard work. Our tutor is just so full of life.
Attending the British Sign Language course at the Connaught Centre has been enlightening. It's an expressive and vibrant language and I've learnt a lot about the Deaf community as well. The tutor has been an inspiration and i've met some lovely people on the course.
