SESSIONAL LECTURER IN HAIRDRESSING
£13.81 to £20.85 per hour

Closing date: 13th September 2012 at 9am with a provisional Interview date: 19th September 2012

Proposed hours:
Tuesday – 4.30pm to 8pm
Wednesday – 12pm – 3pm
Friday – 9am – 11am and 2pm-4.30pm

We are currently looking for a Sessional Lecturer in Hairdressing, which involves managing the learning processes from student recruitment to assessing the outcomes of learning and achievement and all associated administration which may include tutorial responsibilities.

This role requires a high level of professional knowledge, experience and understanding of the subject area, along with professional qualifications. Ideally candidates will have relevant teaching and commercial experience along with a teaching qualification or a willingness to obtain one. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal and a commitment to equality of opportunity are essential criteria. It is a requirement that all new lecturing staff possess GCSE Maths and English (minimum Grade C) or equivalent or willingness to gain.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:

• High level of professional knowledge, experience and understanding of Hairdressing.
• Appropriate professional qualification in Hairdressing at Level 3 or equivalent
• A teaching qualification or willingness to obtain one.
• GCSE Maths and English (minimum Grade C) or equivalent or willingness to gain one.
• Effective communication skills both written and verbal.
• Excellent team working skills.
• A commitment to equality of opportunity.

Desirable:

• Previous teaching experience.
• Knowledge of functional skills at level 1 and 2 in Literacy and Numeracy
• Assessor or verifier awards or other appropriate specialist training qualification.
• Knowledge of social and cultural diversity and its effect on learning.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

The post-holder will be responsible to the Curriculum Manager and will be accountable for:

A Planning, preparing and delivering teaching and learning programmes for learners.

B. Managing the learning process and assessing the outcomes of learning and learners’ achievements.

C. Assisting in course management, review and development and the enrichment of the learners’ experience.

D. Reflecting upon and evaluating one’s own performance.

E. Providing learners with support and pastoral care.

F. Complying with College wide policies and procedures.

Detailed below for guidance is a suggested list of duties that this accountability covers. This list is not exhaustive and may vary from time to time in order that the accountability may be met. Such variations are a common occurrence and cannot themselves justify a re-grading of the post.

Accountability A

1. To assess learners’ needs by identifying and planning for the needs of potential learners and making an initial assessment of learners’ needs.
2. To plan, prepare and deliver teaching and learning programmes for groups and individuals by identifying the required outcomes of the learning programme and the most appropriate teaching and learning techniques.
3. To enhance access to and participation in learning programmes.

4. To develop and use a range of teaching and learning techniques by promoting and encouraging individual learning and by facilitating learning in groups and learning through experience.

Accountability B

1. To establish and maintain an effective learning environment by planning and structuring learning activities.

2. To communicate effectively with learners.

3. To review the learning process with learners, helping them to evaluate and record their progress, including the provision of clear feedback.
4. To select and develop resources to support learning.

5. To establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with staff and learners.

6. To contribute to the College’s quality assurance systems.

7. To use appropriate assessment methods to ensure learning and achievement whilst promoting equality of opportunity and making use of assessment information to modify programmes as appropriate.

Accountability C

1. To play an active role in the review, evaluation and development of courses provided by the Centre.
2. To be involved in subject and course initiatives across the range of work in the Centre and to assist in the development of course materials as necessary.
3. To interpret curriculum requirements in terms of syllabuses, objectives and schemes of work and select and develop resources to meet learning objectives.
4. To liaise with employers to secure work experience and educational visits for students and assist in placing, monitoring and their assessment in the work environment.
5. To assist in the marketing of courses and the interviewing, advising of the recruitment of learners i.e. attendance at Schools Liaison, publicity and Open Days / evenings.
6. To assist in other administrative duties as required.

Accountability D

1. To plan future practice based upon self review and evaluation of own practice.

2. To participate in staff development, continuing professional development and skills updating sessions.

3. To ensure that professional requirements are met by working within a professional value base and by conforming to agreed codes of professional practice.

Accountability E

1. Providing learners with support by ensuring learners are suitably inducted and provided with effective learning support.

2. Ensuring learners are given access to guidance opportunities and provided with personal support.

3. To play an active role in the pastoral care of students referring for specialist support as necessary.

4. To assist with disciplinary matters relating to student conduct, attendance etc.

Accountability F

1. Participate in College probationary review and appraisal processes, agree objectives with the line manager and ensure they are achieved.

2. Comply with the College’s health and safety policy.

3. Work to promote and contribute to the College’s Equal Opportunities Policy.

4. Apply the College’s safeguarding policy and practices.

5. Comply with the College’s procedures in relation to the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

6. Undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION: TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

£13.81 to £20.85 per hour

Full details of conditions of service will be provided in the contract of employment. For information, a summary of the main conditions is given below.

Exclusivity of Service
Employees must not, without the written consent of the Principal, undertake any employment or engagement which might interfere with the performance of duties at the College or conflict with the interests of the Corporation.

Salary
The salary will be the hourly rate within the range lecturing range £13.81 - £20.85 per hour for each hour taught and will be reviewed annually in accordance with Corporation policy. Appointment on the salary scale will depend on relevant experience and qualifications.

The hourly rate is derived from the full time pay scales and is pro rata using a transparent pay formula. Any additional hours required of you, as specified on your Schedule of Engagement, include time for preparation, assessment of learners, marking of exams, course development, office meetings, training and other activities which are incidental to your teaching duties.

Working Hours
The standard working hours at the College are 37 per week. The days upon, and the times at which you are required to work will be in accordance for your Schedule of Engagement for the relevant term. Such schedules will be determined at the absolute discretion of the College. The College normal working week includes Saturday working and it may be necessary to work on a Saturday or in the evenings.

Annual Leave
Under the Working Times Regulations, you are entitled to receive paid holiday. In order to comply with these regulations, the College calculates your hourly rate of pay to include a proportionate element in respect of annual leave and this is shown as a separate item on your payslip. The formula for calculating your hourly pay rate takes into account the pro-rata holiday entitlement to that of a full time member of staff.

Your holidays should be taken out of term time and will have been paid for in advance.

Pension Arrangements
All employees automatically become members of the Teachers Pension Scheme unless they decide to opt out. Your contribution rate depends on how much you are paid. The pay bands that apply from 1 April 2012 are:

The pay band ranges will be increased each year in line with the cost of living. City College Brighton and Hove will make a further contribution of 14.1% of the pensionable pay.

Health Clearance
Appointments to the College are subject to satisfactory health clearance. All new staff are required to complete a Health Questionnaire and may be asked to attend a medical check.

Probation
All new staff to the College will be subject to a probationary period. For lecturing staff, the probationary period is 10 months. Appointment to the College will only be confirmed after the satisfactory completion of the probationary period.

The Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults
The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Criminal Records Bureau.

The nature of this post requires the College to undertake a Criminal Records check on the appointed candidate for any convictions which make it undesirable for the candidate to undertake this post. Under the terms of the check you are not entitled to withhold information about convictions which for other purposes are “spent” under the provisions of the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

English, Maths and ICT
The College is committed to ensuring that all staff have the necessary GCSE or equivalent in Maths, English and ICT (ECDL or CLAIT). The College is committed to providing support or training where appropriate to assist staff achieve these qualifications.

There are limited car parking spaces available on College premises for a termly fee. Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee a parking space for all staff.
