We are seeking to recruit sessional careers / Next Step Advisors to provide a range of advice services to support student progression into further learning and work.
 
You will have experience of delivering advice services to range of clients and you will have a strong understanding of the barriers young people and adults face when accessing learning and work. You will be confident in liaising and building positive relationships with relevant external partners. You will have a degree and a recognised advice or guidance qualification at level 4. A commitment to widening participation is essential, as are good levels of IT literacy.

Educational Achievements 

Degree or equivalent
Hold an NVQ 4 in Advice and Guidance 
Other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Institute of Careers Guidance or other regulatory bodies.
 

ACCOUNTABILITIES 

 
The post-holder will report to the Team Leader for Careers and Student Progression and will be accountable for the following duties:
 
To provide unbiased careers and skills information advice and guidance services and/or other related services to individual and groups of students 
 
To provide labour market, educational, occupational and other local information to enable clients to make informed decisions.
 
To provide referral support to clients to enable them to implement their decisions.
 
To develop a personal knowledge of available learning and work opportunities in the local area working closely with supporting agencies in order to ensure clients’ needs are fully met.
 
To record activities with clients in order to fulfil contractual requirements to deadline e.g. SMART Action Plans, client record forms
 
To use IT to open Skills Accounts and take clients through a Skills Health Check; 
 
To follow up clients and record outcomes of interventions in order to assess their support needs and meet MI requirements as required by specific contracts
 
To provide reports and MI statistics according to timelines provided.
 
To ensure that services offered comply with Quality Standards set by the Team Leader and the College.
 
To work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure effective team working.
 
To meet individual delivery targets on an ongoing basis as agreed with your line manager; 
 
Such other duties as determined by the Team Leader and the Head of Student Support as compatible with the post.

Hourly rate £12.10 to £14.38
 
Full details of conditions of service will be provided in the contract of employment. For information, a summary of the main conditions is given below.
 
Exclusivity of Service
Employees must not, without the written consent of the Principal, undertake any employment or engagement which might interfere with the performance of duties at the College or conflict with the interests of the Corporation.
 
Salary
The salary will be the hourly rate of £12.10 to £14.38 per hour for each hour taught and will be reviewed annually in accordance with Corporation policy. The hourly rate is derived from the full time pay scales and is pro-rata using a transparent pay formula.
 
Working Hours
The standard working hours are 37 per week and the hours you will be expected to work will be in agreement with your line manager and may be subject to change. The College normal working week includes Saturday working and it will be necessary to work on a Saturday or in the evenings for which you will be given time off in lieu.
 
Annual Leave
Under the Working Times Regulations, you are entitled to receive paid holiday. In order to comply with these regulations, your hourly rate of pay includes a proportionate element in respect of annual leave. The formula for calculating your hourly pay rate takes into account the pro-rata holiday entitlement to that of a full time member of staff. 
Your holidays should be taken out of term time and will have been paid for in advance. 
 
Pension Arrangements
All employees automatically become members of the Local Government Pension Scheme unless they decide to opt out. Your contribution rate depends on how much you are paid. The pay bands that apply from 1 April 2011 are:

More than £12,901 and up to £15,100 5.8%
More than £15,101 and up to £19,400 5.9%
More than £19,401 and up to £32,400 6.5%

More than £81,100 7.5%
 
The pay band ranges will be increased each year in line with the cost of living. City College Brighton and Hove will make a further contribution of 17.8% of the pensionable pay.
 
Health Clearance
All potential new staff are required to complete a Health Questionnaire and may be asked to attend a medical check.
 
Probation
All new staff to the College will be subject to a probationary period. The probationary period for this post is 6 months. Appointment to the College will only be confirmed after the satisfactory completion of the probationary period.
 
The Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults
The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Criminal Records Bureau.
 
The nature of this post requires the College to undertake a Criminal Records check on the appointed candidate for any convictions which make it undesirable for the candidate to undertake this post. Under the terms of the check you are not entitled to withhold information about convictions which for other purposes are “spent” under the provisions of the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Skills for Life

Smoking Policy
Smoking is not permitted on College premises.
 
Childcare Vouchers

Car Parking
There are limited car parking spaces available on College premises for a termly fee. Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee a parking space for all staff. 
 
College Facilities
These are open to College staff and include use of the Library, Refectory, Snack Bar and Staff Common Rooms.
