In today's high-pressure business world there is an increasing amount of conflict in the workplace. The CIPD's recent 'Managing Conflict at Work' survey of 1,190 employers suggested that dealing with conflict is taking up more and more HR time.
Over 60 per cent of respondents said that they had seen an increase in the use of HR departments to resolve individual disputes. And it is time-consuming and costly - employers say they are spending an average of 10.5 days per case dealing with disciplinary and grievance issues. It is in this context that the new Conflict Management on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd August is a timely addition to the range of training offered to employers by the City Business Skills training unit at City College Brighton and Hove.

'Conflict in Workplace' Training at City College
This one-day course, taking place at Pelham Tower, Pelham Street, Brighton, is suitable for a variety of sectors such as teachers, council workers, airport staff, transport workers and service sector employees. It shows how to deal with aggression and personal safety plus the importance of body language in difficult situations. The course also covers managing conflict by applying dynamic risk approaches, understanding the importance of self-awareness and acting proactively, how to defuse conflict by overcoming communication blocks, signalling non-aggression and managing high-risk situations, how to resolve conflict, and how to learn from conflict. Wherever the course has been taught, without exception it has reduced violence in the workplace by at least 50%, regardless of the sector.
Corrine Baker, Business Team Leader at City Business Skills says:
'It's been interesting to see the wide range of employers that have already signed up for this training. This includes entertainment venues, community projects and small businesses. The course provides very valuable training for everyone - especially front-line staff who work in situations where conflict is a daily occupational hazard.'
