“Step out of limbo and into City College” says Principal

7 September 2011

City College Brighton and Hove, recently praised as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted, is reassuring potential students hoping to study in the 2011/2012 academic year that there are still opportunities available on a range of courses.

'Whether its down to a scarcity of university places, disappointing GCSE or A level results, jobs or work placements that have fallen through or simply a lack of support due to the demise of the Connexions service, I realise that there are hundreds of young people locally who feel that they’re in limbo at the moment. I want to reassure them that as their local community college, we see ourselves as a public service that are here to help and has a responsibility to help young people achieve the best standard of education and training possible', says Principal Phil Frier. 'I also hope that our new Ofsted grade sends out the message to local parents that their sons and daughters will get an outstanding learning experience in a friendly, welcoming community. I would add, however, that there are a finite number of places available on courses starting in the next two weeks so anyone interested in coming to the College needs to contact us as soon as possible.'

As the City of Brighton and Hove's Vocational College, City College has a wide range of practical and work-related courses at all levels available for young people and adults. Government funding body The Young Person's Learning Agency (YPLA) has acknowledged City College's growing success and recent achievements by providing an additional 210 places for school leavers or for sixth formers taking a gap year at age 18. There are now further course opportunities right across all subject areas in the Arts, the Building & Catering Trades, Business & Retail, Sports, Health and Childcare. It is also a good time to consider an Apprenticeship and the College can help young people to secure employment and a training salary so that they can learn on the job. City College is a specialist vocational college that provides the skills, training and experience to go directly into work or onto a university course. Vocational qualifications offer a progression route and learning experience that is valued by employers and can also allow students to gain the UCAS points required for a University application. The College also benefits from having its central campus in the fashionable North Laine area in the heart of Brighton, just five minutes walk from Brighton station while its City College East campus is located close to the Marina.

With facilities including digital media suites, a travel bureau, workshops, dedicated art studios, a brand new Student Centre and a new state-of-the-art training restaurant at the Amex Stadium, students can gain a qualification in the kind of setting that will allow them to gain the experience that employers value. The College also has excellent local employer links in sectors such as construction, sports, arts, media, business and catering. Courses on offer range from entry level to postgraduate specialist courses, with industry certificates and training and diplomas in between, so no matter what level students are at with their current skills and qualifications, the College can meet most educational needs.
