‘Time to celebrate vocational training’ says Phil Frier

28 September 2009

Prior to their City Achievers 2009 student awards ceremony on 1st October, City College Brighton and Hove’s Principal Phil Frier has said that the event is not just to celebrate student achievement in a year that has seen the College’s best results ever, but to champion vocational/professional training in general:

"I think that the community of Brighton and Hove can take great pride in the fact that their local College is now in the top league of Further Education colleges in the country and that more of our students than ever have achieved top grades but we also want City Achievers 2009 to celebrate vocational qualifications in general."

"These qualifications provide practical skills which are essential to a healthy economy yet they don’t enjoy the prestige of their more academic counterparts. During the awards ceremony, we’ll be hearing inspirational stories of how Further Education transforms lives and with muted talk of the country slowly coming out of a recession, its highly-skilled and motivated people like our ‘City Achievers’ that employers will be crying out for."

From a cohort of over 10,000 students, the College has chosen forty-one winners in areas as diverse as Visual Arts, Business, Hairdressing, Horticulture, Carpentry, Sports and Catering. One overall ‘City Achiever 2009’ will be announced on the night.
