'Train to Gain' Boost for City College and Local Employers

15 September 2006

City College is set to capture significant business under the Government's new 'Train to Gain' initiative launched this month to improve workplace skills. Train to Gain is a new way of working with employers that uses a brokerage service to diagnose business and training needs, sourcing training as appropriate. Some elements of this training will be eligible for Government funding while other elements will need to be paid for by the employer. The £1 billion programme is set to help 350,000 under-skilled employees every year.

Andrew Green, City College's Assistant Principal, Skills and Standards says:

Train to Gain

'City College is really excited about the new funding available for Brighton and Hove SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises) to train their staff. This great new Government initiative will help City College to further its work with local employers. As well as those companies who already invest in training and access the high quality offer at the College, the College will be specifically looking to engage with employers who are yet to realise the real positive impact on profits that investing in the training of their staff can bring. Train to Gain will give local SMEs access to Government funding via the College for training their staff in NVQs. This training can be delivered in the workplace, at the College or a mix of the two to suit the needs of the employer and the employee.'

Ann Smith, Principal of City College says:

'Success in tendering for Train to Gain contracts is based on a track record of engaging with employers and successfully delivering high quality training. We've therefore shown both our commitment to working with employers and our capacity to successfully respond to changing Government priorities.'

In a recent Government survey of 74,000 businesses, 82% of employers approved of the training they receive from colleges. 84% of people in the UK believe their local college is as important to business as a university.
