City College Principal, Ann Smith has announced her intention to retire in January 2008 when she reaches the age of 60. Ann's glittering career in Further Education has spanned 35 years, 15 of which have been spent at City College. She joined as an Assistant Principal in Business and Humanities in 1991. She was appointed Deputy Principal in 1993 and took over the reins as Principal in 2000. City College Chairman Martin Perry says:
'Ann has put her heart and soul into City College and turned it from a failing College with a poor reputation into the leading FE provider in the City with a reputation that has improved beyond all measure. The College is now consistently exceeding its targets in learner numbers and we have enjoyed sustained improvement year on year in its key measures of Retention, Achievement and Success Rate. It is now a College that students want to come to, get a good learning experience and achieve good results. From being in a weak position, it is now financially sound and in a good position to face the challenges ahead. Ann has done a brilliant job for the College and we are very grateful to her for all her hard work and commitment. At the time of her retirement the Board will be inviting our partners and stakeholders to a special event to celebrate her success. In the meantime she has given plenty of time to fill a key post in the City.'

Ann Smith - Principal of City College Brighton and Hove
City College Principal Ann Smith says:
'The opportunities that have been afforded me at City College have been second to none and I am very proud of what we have achieved. In the period since I have been Principal the College has grown from 11,000 to 17,000 enrolments and total income has grown from £11 million to £19 million. Using my management, marketing and business skills we have been awarded six Centres of Vocational Excellence, achieved Action for Business College Accreditation and opened up new international training markets in China, Saudi Arabia and India.I have enjoyed every moment of it and felt very honoured when my achievements were marked by the award of Businessperson of the Year in 2004."
Ann concludes:
'None of the above could have been achieved without the support of my loyal and committed Executive team, the backing of the Board and the highly qualified and professional lecturing, business and support staff. Together we have tried to engender a team spirit to provide the very best opportunities for our students. As a result a large number of them have been successful in their chosen careers and a number have won honours in national competitions. There is no better tonic for College staff than to see their students succeed and excel. This is a great College and the new Principal will inherit a brilliant team. I will unstintingly continue to work for excellence and the continuing raising of standards in the College until I retire. I will leave with great sadness in January 2008 but I will take with me some terrific memories.'
