Apprentices Need Employers!

19 October 2007

Rewards, City College's Work Based Learning agency, is eager to hear from local employers who are willing to take on apprentices. The apprenticeships are designed by Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) which are licensed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills. Each SSC is an employer-led, independent organisation that covers a specific sector. SSCs represent a range of industries and therefore can provide the appropriate training that employees need in the workplace to make businesses more effective, productive and competitive. A well-trained apprentice can make a real contribution to any business.

City College offers apprenticeships in such areas as Construction, Plumbing, Motor Vehicle, Business Administration, Retail, Customer Care, Management, Hospitality, Early Years and Hairdressing.

Construction and Motor Vehicle apprentices attend college one day per week during term times with the remainder of the learning taking place when the apprentice is working for an employer. All other apprenticeships are delivered wholly in the work place.

Paul Williams, Commercial Director of Rewards, says:

'There are serious skills shortages in Brighton and Hove, particularly in areas like the service sector and construction so we feel that by taking on apprentices, employers are not only doing something to help their own business, they're also making a vital contribution to improving the skills of the local workforce.' If you'd like to know more about apprenticeships, and the funding and support mechanisms involved, call Rewards on 01273 739028.
