City College Brighton and Hove's Principal Phil Frier recently presented trophies to the first male and female runners with BN postcodes to complete the Brighton Marathon. The winning athletes were Chris Thomson and Cathy Ulliott who posted very impressive times of 2:29:54 and 3.05:42 respectively while Chris secured 3rd place overall on his first marathon attempt which also happened to fall on his 26th birthday. Each winner also received £250 prize money which Cathy has donated to the Martlet's Hospice.
The winners' trophies were designed by Fine Art student, Cadi Froehlich, who had been commissioned for this project with the support of her tutor Chris Hill. Together they worked on a special design to capture the spirit of the city. Aside from providing the trophies, 120 volunteers from City College had helped on the day and the College also had their own water station at Shoreham Power Station. Carpentry staff and students took on the massive task of constructing a wall to symbolise the importance of getting through the physiological barrier that marathon runners are commonly believed to hit after running for 20 miles. The wall - in scale, bigger than a double-decker bus - was erected on the Basin Road South stretch of the marathon route. In a further link between the two organisations, City College provided the marathon's organisers with free SIA security training for their staff.

The 'Best Brightonian' Marathon runners
Phil Frier said:
'The marathon was an outstanding event for the College to be involved in and we're delighted to be able to celebrate the prowess of local runners with these awards.'
