City College Brighton and Hove student Alec Williams has been announced as a winner in Persimmon Homes' Apprentice of the Year Award scheme, beating off competition from across the South Coast to clinch this coveted title. Alec (19) is studying for a qualification in Carpentry & Joinery at City College and is currently based at Persimmon's Chichester development. Alec says:
'I've had a brilliant time at City College. My tutors have taught me all the skills I need for a successful career in Carpentry. It's definitely helped me to reach a level where I can win an award like this.'

Now in the third year of his apprenticeship, Alec will represent the South Coast in the next stage of the awards, where he hopes to emerge triumphant as regional winner. If victorious, he will then proceed to the national final for the ultimate accolade ? Persimmon's Apprentice of the Year 2006 with a top prize of £1,000. Stephen Bennett, Construction Director for Persimmon's South Coast region says:
'It's always a pleasure to mentor apprentices who show a real talent and aptitude and I'm delighted Alec has been announced as the winner for the South Coast. I'm sure he has a great future ahead of him and I wish him every success for the next stage of the competition.'
Persimmon's internal apprentice award scheme was launched in 2003 to increase the profile of young people in the construction industry and highlight their value in the workplace. All second and third year Persimmon and Charles Church apprentices are eligible to enter - a figure which currently stands at 250 across 34 regional companies.
