Carpentry team replaces stolen sledge

21 December 2010

When The Argus ran a story recently about mean-spirited thieves stealing a Brighton teenager's sledge, City College's carpentry team immediately stepped in to offer a free replacement. The team had already being making traditional wooden sledges for sale ? in high demand during the recent snowy spell - which has raised £1,500 towards continuing their project to provide homes and basic infrastructure for people whose children currently live in the slum areas of Nakuru in Kenya. The current cooking facilities that the students aim to replace at Nakuru's Prisons Primary School are crude charcoal burners in a dilapidated shack.

'I was delighted and touched when The Argus contacted me to say that the College's carpenters had offered to replace my son's sledge and I was also really interested to hear about their Kenya project and the fact that the sledges are being made for such a good cause.'
