City College Brighton and Hove students Claire Johnson (Multimedia) and Matthew Prior (Media) recently got some hands-on experience of the world of TV production when they worked as part of the team running the Junior Newsreader Challenge at Brighton's Churchill Square.
The Junior Newsreader Challenge features a mini studio complete with ITV Meridian backdrop and newsreaders' desk where children can have a go at reading a news bulletin to camera, using an autocue. They then get to take home a DVD of their efforts. Fred Dinenage, the face of ITV in the South, was also on hand to encourage and mentor the budding broadcasters. The Challenge has been running for a year and has proved to be a very successful PR exercise for ITV Meridian. Claire and Matthews' duties included setting up the equipment, assisting the Technical Operator in filming, recruiting and registering children for the Challenge, recording and burning to DVD, and helping to de-rig.

Claire Johnson says:
'Standing amongst all the technical equipment with my headphones on using the mixing desk and getting experience of all the behind-the-scenes production was really enjoyable. The whole day was a valuable learning experience in terms of interacting with the public and working with TV professionals who do this for a living every day.'
Matthew Prior says:
'The best thing for me was the fact that the ITV team trusted us to get stuck in and use all the equipment straight away. I had to think on my feet but luckily everything went really smoothly. It's an excellent piece of work experience to be able to add to my CV.'
Alison Pope, ITV Meridian's Head of Regional Affairs, says:
"Both Claire and Matt were invaluable to the Junior Newsreader Challenge. As well as being accomplished in the skills we required from them, they were friendly and reliable and, perhaps most importantly, willing to undertake any job that was thrown at them."
