City College Access students celebrate their success

28 June 2010

Students at City College Brighton and Hove studying on Access courses that provide a route into University, have been celebrating their success at an awards evening hosted by the College. Two students who exemplify how Access courses can transform people's lives are Tonia McBurney and Kalishia Lecoutre. Access Psychology student Tonia says:

'I'd been through 25 years of addiction and needed to turn my life around. I'd suffered brain damage through my addiction and starting the access course was something I never dreamt I could do so its incredible to me that I actually did achieve it. I've now got a place at Brighton University studying Psychology & Applied Sociology. The support I had at City College was fantastic. I had extra learning support particularly to do with my maths and the tutors have been fantastic and so supportive. I was honest with them about my situation from the beginning and they've been amazing. Doing this course has completely changed my life. I just never thought it would be possible.'

Kalishia, who studied Politics, Policy-making and Globalisation on her Access course, says:

'I didn't get on well at school and was disillusioned with education and didn't think it was for me. But having the tutors and the right support from the College helped me realise my potential and overcome that. It felt amazing to be able to achieve what I did on this course but having the tutors and the support of my classmates really helped me to get there. Now I'm confident that I'll get a place on a Politics and Development Studies degree at Sussex University which will link really well with my job as a Community Development worker.'

Phil Frier, Principal of City College, says:

'Chatting with students such as Tonia and Kalishia just reaffirms something that I passionately believe in ? the fact that education has the power to change people's lives. In these days of serious cutbacks in education funding, celebratory events like these don't just remind us why Further Education colleges are so vital to the community, it also makes us even more determined to maintain our standards and level of commitment whatever the circumstances.'
