Three adult learners from City College Brighton and Hove have been celebrating their success in the annual 'Adult Learners of the Year' awards held at Hove Town Hall during Adult Learners Week. Victoria Sheridan was recognised for dedication in her 'Keep Fit for the Not So Young' class, Markus Rabl was awarded for his outstanding skills in Stained Glass, and there was also an award for the talent that current City College NVQ Catering student Wendy Wendy Tunnicliffe has displayed in her 'Cookability' class that she has been undertaking through the Bridge Community Education Centre in Brighton.
Victoria Sheridan says:

City College's
'I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and I thought that joining a 'Keep Fit for the Not So Young' would help. My tutor Gene Barefoot is amazing and the Margaret Morris Method of movement she teaches uses every muscle in the body. To carry that knowledge out of the class into my everyday life has been such a gift from her because it's helped me live my life in a much more healthy way. When I went to see my consultant, he'd seen an improvement in me which in Parkinson's is very unusual. Winning the award has been quite a tearjerker really because it's unexpected. It's fantastic to recognise adult learners because the whole way through life we should be able to learn something that helps us on our way.'
Wendy Tunnicliffe says:
'I've never thought of myself as the type of person who wins awards so it really means a lot that other people think this much of me.'
Markus Rabl says:
'I'm very excited that I've won this award because I've never won anything before. I've had health issues which I've overcome and I really think that I can do things like set up my own business and do things that I enjoy. It feels like a new start in life.'
City College Principal Phil Frier adds:
'Just listening to the learners saying things like 'this course changed my life' and 'this is the first award I've ever had' makes it a very life-affirming experience for everyone involved. These awards bring forth wonderful stories about the power of education to change peoples' lives.'
