City College Appoints New Principal

2 April 2007

The Board of City College Brighton and Hove are delighted to announce today that they have appointed Phil Frier to the post of Principal and Chief Executive with effect from August 2007.

Phil Frier is currently Executive Director at Sussex Downs College which has campuses in Lewes and Eastbourne, and was formerly Principal of Park College, Eastbourne before it merged with Sussex Downs College in 2003.

The appointment has been made following the announcement last November by the current Principal Ann Smith, that she would be retiring in January 2008. City College then announced in February this year that it would be seeking funding to completely rebuild its estate and because of the complexity of these negotiations, Mrs. Smith agreed that strategically it would be in the best interests of the College for the new Principal to lead the bid process and so she will now be retiring in August.

Chairman of City College, Martin Perry says:

'I'm thrilled that we have secured the services of a very experienced educational leader to take over the helm at City College. We face huge challenges ahead and Phil Frier demonstrated to us that he shares our vision for the College. He has the expertise and determination to deliver a college which has a reputation for high quality teaching and learning and is at the heart of our local education and business community.'

'He has an enviable track record in the FE sector coming from Sussex Downs College which is a very successful college with an excellent reputation. He has built productive collaborative partnerships with other education providers and sectors and these skills will be a vital ingredient for the job in Brighton and Hove. I'm really looking forward to working with him.'

Appointee Phil Frier says:

'I'm delighted to have been appointed to this important post at City College. Brighton and Hove is a vibrant and exciting city which deserves only the best educational provision. I share the view of Board members in believing that City College should be a real Centre of Excellence providing outstanding education and skills training. I'm really looking forward to working in close partnership with the other college Principals and school Heads in the city, and forging effective working links with the City Council and local businesses and Arts groups.'

"Brighton is a fast evolving World Class city and I want City College to be a key part of that development in terms of the new campus accommodation, but more particularly in terms of the quality of teaching and learning available to both our young people and members of the adult community.'

Martin Perry adds:

'The selection panel from the Board were supported by external members representing both the education and business community. Part of the selection process included a buffet laid on by City College students where all the candidates were invited to meet external stakeholders with an interest in the College. I am extremely grateful to all of those who took part in the process. The attendance at the reception clearly demonstrated the huge support the College enjoys and what an important part the College plays in the educational landscape of the City.'
