City College Backs 'Save Our Post Office' Campaign

5 December 2007

City College Brighton and Hove has pledged its support to the campaign to persuade the Post Office Ltd not to close the Post Office at 8 Trafalgar Street which is used daily by College staff and students. The College is urging staff and students to sign a petition which has been organised by local Councillors, and is also supported by North Laine Traders and local MP David Lepper. The College's public backing of the campaign is highlighting the issue just prior to a Public Meeting on local post office closures to be held on Thursday 6th December at 7.00pm in the Lecture Hall of the Friends Meeting House on Ship Street. Confirmed speakers at the meeting include local historian, Selma Montford MBE, Green Party parliamentary candidate, Dr Caroline Lucas MEP, and Gary Herbert of Post Office Ltd.

Phil Frier, Principal of City College, says:

'The Post Office has an integral role in the life of the North Laine community and this move therefore seems totally ill-conceived and damaging. It's been heartening to see how everyone in the area is supporting their local Post Office and here at City College we feel its only right to speak up about this issue.'

Ian Davey, Green Party Councillor for St Peters & North Laine, says:

"City College's staff and students are part of the lifeblood of North Laine so as Ward Councillor, I'm delighted that the College is getting behind the community's campaign to save their Post Office. The North Laine community has a unique blend of local independent businesses so the loss of the Post Office would be a devastating blow to those businesses and to the community. We are calling on the Post Office Ltd to rethink this decision now."
