City College Brings 'Epsom Downs' to the Fringe

20 May 2005

As part of this year's Brighton Fringe Festival, National Diploma Performing Arts Year 2 students from City College Brighton and Hove are presenting 'Epsom Downs' on Thursday 26th May and Friday 27th May at the Tower Theatre, Pelham Street. Commissioned and first performed in 1977, the play charts the fortunes of a host of characters during Derby Day in Silver Jubilee year.

From a drunken Labour Peer to a homeless family living in a dormobile, Howard Brenton skilfully weaves a complex tapestry of stories together into a satirically comic drama about life in Britain during a time of social upheaval and change: Derby Day. The Cockney's holiday - half a million cheeky chappies on the grass stuffing themselves with Brown Ale and ham sandwiches?.it has a lot of old world charm!

A cast of 18 play a multitude of parts, including the bookies, the punters, the trainers, the owners, the Aga Khan and even the horses and their jockeys. The play is both funny and a serious look at a day in the life of a nation and the production culminates in the staging of the race itself.

Tickets are available at the Dome Box Office 01273 709709 8pm £4.00, £2.50 (concessions)
