A carpentry student from City College Brighton and Hove has scooped a rare and coveted award for his exceptional work. William Milne (21), is one of only 88 people from over three quarters of a million eligible learners to win a City & Guilds Medal for Excellence for his outstanding performance in Carpentry. The Awards Ceremony was held at Carpenter's Hall in London and the medal was presented to William by Anne Main, the MP for St. Albans.
City & Guilds, the UK's leading awarding body for work-related qualifications, has been awarding medals annually since 1879. The Medals for Excellence programme rewards talented people who have displayed exceptional standards as a lecturer, learner or external verifier with City & Guilds, and whose portfolio and achievements stand out from the crowd.

According to the City & Guilds judging panel:
'William showed tremendous determination and originality in his coursework, and has achieved very high standards. He is a deserving recipient of the Medal for Excellence and we are delighted to have chosen him for this award.'
William says:
'Winning this award gave me a great sense of achievement and really made me feel that all my hard work had paid off. It's given me a lot of confidence when it comes to my future career in Carpentry. My tutor at City College, Dave Cotton, put in a lot of effort to help me progress.'
Dave Cotton says:
'William's commitment and organisational skills were obvious from the outset. Having seen his craftsmanship, enthusiasm and determination, I'm sure he's got a very successful career in carpentry ahead of him.'
William is now in the running to win one of eight prestigious Lion Awards - formerly known as the UK Awards - which will be announced at an 'Oscars' style event to celebrate learning, success and achievement in London later this year.
