City College Brighton and Hove is taking a keen interest in the plans for the King Alfred Development being submitted by Karis ING. The College signed an agreement with the developer two years ago to provide construction skills training for people involved in the project. Since then, under the project title of 'Constructing Futures', the College has developed a very successful craft training centre on the Brighton Station project. The King Alfred site is another of the key developments in the City of Brighton & Hove which will provide an ideal opportunity to tackle the chronic shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry.
Chairman of City College, Martin Perry says:
"The College has recently been accredited by the Learning and Skills Council as an Action for Business College and just last week our achievements were recognised at the Brighton & Hove Business Awards for our contribution to Education in the Community. This project with Karis is another example of the way in which the College is responding to the needs of employers in this city. For far too long the construction industry has failed to provide adequate training for young people in construction and craft skills and this joint venture with Karis is an outstanding example of the way in which developers and training providers can work together to tackle the problem."
Deputy Principal of City College, John Evans says:
"We are extremely pleased to have been involved from the outset in the development of the King Alfred site. We signed the initial training agreement with Karis two years ago, at the same time as we were beginning our 'Constructing Futures' project to build the skills capacity of the city. Projects such as the King Alfred's development have longer term and broader impacts than the building itself, if such projects are integrated and connected to education, training and future jobs. The College is looking forward to linking its Construction industry training to the King Alfred through Constructing Futures, to build a sustainable workforce that can not only do the job, but having been taught the importance of training, go on to assist in the training of others."
Karis ING estimate that between 400 and 750 jobs will be created every year during the construction of the King Alfred project. The Karis Agreement will ensure that all contractors appointed by Karis ING provide jobs and training opportunities for local people. City College is working with Karis ING to ensure the provision of relevant training courses to match the skills that will be required.
The Karis Agreement has been welcomed and is also supported by Brighton & Hove City Council and the Sussex Learning & Skills Council. The innovative framework for employment and training has been recognized by SEEDA and the Sector Skills Development Agency as a model of best practice for all major developments.
