Having achieved a Silver Medal in last year's show, City College Brighton and Hove Horticulture students are aiming for Gold with a Greek-themed entry to the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2005.'The Epicurean Garden' was designed by student Beccy Pook. Beccy studied garden design last year and is currently studying towards her RHS General Certificate in Horticulture while setting up her own garden design business. The garden has been entered in the 'Small Gardens' category and the BBC recently spent a day filming 'work in progress' of the garden and interviewing those involved. This will be featured in the BBC's coverage of Hampton Court during July.
Students were given a brief to design and build a garden with edible plants based around the philosophies of Epicurus. The garden is designed to evoke Epicurus's own garden in Athens which was central to his work and teaching as a philosopher. Epicurus's main philosophy was the importance of simple pleasures and his favourite pastime was to sit and enjoy food with his friends. All the plants in the garden have an edible component.

The Epicurean Garden has a simple Greek feel and is the perfect space for relaxing and enjoying good company or entertaining your friends. Epicurus's philosophies on gaining knowledge through stimulation of the senses are explored in the planting by including plants which can be eaten, are interesting to touch and look at as well as producing scents and sounds. Internationally acclaimed Brighton restaurant Terre a Terre will be preparing some food dishes with plants from the garden to display on an oak bench designed by student Rob Demel.
The main sponsor of 'The Epicurean Garden' is Datashare Solutions Ltd. The entry is also being sponsored by Terre a Terre, Connick Tree Care and the Southdown Housing Association.
